  • Topic 1: Phonetics and greetings - Basic greetings, introduction to Chinese culture and language, China's influence on the world and basic greetings

  • Topic 2: Phonetics and numerals - explore phonetics and learn to count numbers

  • Topic 3: Surnames, first names and nationality - acquire knowledge on Chinese names and describe nationalities, learn aboout the 12 Chinese Zodiac

  • Topic 4: Family and profession - explore the cultural background of Chinese families and professions

  • Topic 5: Asking the way - learn how give and receive directions

  • Topic 6: Being a guest - learn about the Chinese family, their ways of living and hospitality

  • Topic 7: Shopping and currency - acquire knowledge about Chinese currency and shopping

  • Topic 9: Happy Birthday!- learn about birthday celebrations in China

  • Topic 10: Celebrations - celebrate the end of the term with a Chinese tea ceremony in classroom

    Learning outcomes

    At the end of the course, students should be able to:

    • acquire knowledge on Chinese phonetics and become familiar with practical fundamentals covering various topics
    • identify the nuances of Chinese people and their values, and how these could impact on their everyday life
    • establish a long term passion for probing Chinese language, culture and history.
