Course outline

Each week we will read, explore and analyse a poem or an aria by Italy’s foremost poets, librettists and composers, spanning from the XVIII to the XX centuries. There will be a focus on the beautiful lyrical language of each piece and its socio-historical context.  Brief biographies, anecdotes and performances will enrich the experience. The sophisticated language encountered will enhance the vocabulary and grammar focus will be on verbs, poetic licence and, as always, ad-hoc requests from the students.  Students will be encouraged to comment, discuss, write, recite, and sing: whatever activity suits them best to showcase and perfect their language skills.
