Beginning German 2

Beginning German 2 is for students who have completed Beginning German 1 or similar (approximately 20 hours of study) and wish to further develop their conversation, reading and writing skills. The course will explore the use of German in a diverse range of situations using text and media with the cultural, social and geographical aspects of German speaking countries being a focal point throughout.

Each session will be devoted to certain topics such as everyday life and travel to develop essential vocabulary, grammar, sentence structure, conversation skills.

Course outline

Based on the chapters 3-4 of the textbook, Optimal A1, and supplemented with the German language video series, Deutsch Aktuell the following will be covered during your course.

  • Week 1-4: After initial introductions and assessing both the collective knowledge and interests of students, a revisions of conversations skills will begin followed by a look at grammar including gender and cases, verbs and past tense, forming the past participle of (in)separable verbs and perfect tense. Focussing on the topic of a holiday or trip, you will learn and practise using the past tense and preterite past tense. You will then learn how to express your plans and intentions using the days of the week and months of the year.
  • Week 5-9: Grocery shopping and restaurants will be the main focus as you learn to use numbers, money and measurements to order and buy food. You will be introduced to modal verbs, prepositions in the dative/accusative cases, comparative and superlative forms of adjectives and the three different ways to express, "like".

Learning outcomes

By the end of the course students should have:

  • developed their German conversation, reading and writing skills further
  • have knowledge of the German language and culture

Who should enrol

For those who have completed Beginning German 1 or similar (approximately 20 hours of study). This course is suited to those interested in learning a new language for professional, cultural or personal reasons or for maintaining already acquired / existing language skills in the relevant language. The course is open to any age group.
