Since humans gained the power of speech, they have told stories to celebrate joy and to seek comfort in sadness. The texts chosen have always been in print. Why? They are The Odyssey, Le Morte D’Arthur, Moby Dick, The Big Sleep, The Getaway and Cold Mountain. Similarly, Hollywood has translated these to the screen, certain of handsome returns.

Cassata Siciliana: Sicily explored through literature and film
Sergio Sergi
6-8pm on 8 Thursdays from 18 September - $284
Gain an insight into Italian literary history as viewed from a very particular angle, that of an offshore island with a distinct history and linguistic heritage. Secondly, we are made aware of the variety of forms of expression used by Sicilians, from poetry to music to film. Third, while all of the material is presented in English, having a bilingual presenter will enrich the experiences as passages will be presented in the original language.

Literary banquets

What sort of food did Chaucer eat at a formal dinner? How about Jane Austen? Or the members of the Algonquin Club? This course will work through some of the best food eaten by the best writers. We will read fine writing to accompany fine food.

The practical screenwriter

We will cover the practical issues of putting together a project package, dealing with producers, working with agents and professional organisations, searching for development finance, contracts and lawyers, keeping your creative “soul” intact. Includes practical exercises and examples from the screentrade in Australia and overseas.

The story clinic

The Story Clinic is designed to help aspiring writers explore the possibilities of a story that they intend to write; the focus of the course will be on stories intended for the large or small screen, in any genre. The course will workshop story elements, the logic of narratives, and the skills required to match ambition with a completed text.

Story coaching online
Hunter Cordaiy
Online, approx 10 weeks. conducted by email and phone using Skype - $350ND
This course is for writers wishing to develop a storyline for the large or small screen, and focuses on the first stage of that process with the guiding principle that 'story is everything'. Story Coaching will be an individual, online course with weekly tasks and outcomes to be achieved. Students will progress through the steps of creative story development from first idea to location, character, time, structure, genre, complete storyline, and intended format. Each student can expect to be engaged on their story work for approximately 10 weeks.

English is trilingual: basic and everyday words are from the Germanic Anglo Saxon, but 60% of its vocabulary is from Latin and the academic lexicon is Greek. For those who wish to confidently manipulate words to amuse, confuse or influence.

We will look at how and where to make improvements in your essay writing by: understanding the structure and aim of the essay writing process; sorting out where the problem lies; examining the qualities of a good essay and looking at background processes that can lead to errors.

Writing clearly, communicating effectively

Session Full: 6-8pm on 10 Wednesdays from 23 July - $299
Designed for those who want to produce clear, coherent and concise writing. Clear writing is the key to communicating your ideas effectively. Understanding the essential elements of grammar, punctuation, spelling and good usage will help you to achieve this. Knowing how to construct sentences and paragraphs, and to link ideas and structure an argument will make your writing more focused, readable and persuasive.
