This practical course aims to develop the skills required to write film and/or television reviews for magazines, newspapers and the internet. We will look at research and viewing skills, publishing formats, audiences, the marketplace for criticism, ethics and career development.

An introduction to Chinese landscape painting

Learn the Chinese brush techniques for landscape painting using Chinese ink and watercolour. Chinese painting techniques have developed over thousands of years and are still used today in traditional and modern Chinese painting. Suitable for all levels.

We look in detail at exciting art in galleries and art museums in Amsterdam, Auckland, Boston, Edinburgh, Hong Kong, London, Ottawa and Philadelphia – a virtual tour that avoids the hassles of queuing.

Chinese/Japanese brush painting, meditation and philosophy for beginners

9.30am-4pm Saturday & Sunday, 2 & 3 August - $219 ND
Learn the basic brushwork through meditative practice, and gain an understanding of the philosophy behind this ancient form of painting. The workshop will contain the basic techniques and the “Four Gentlemen”, bamboo, orchid, plum blossom and chrysanthemum. NB course held at Janet’s own studio, off-campus. Expect to pay up to $50 for materials to be provided by Janet on day 1 + your own materials – list provided upon enrolment.

This course will be a continuation of the beginners course and will explore further the meditation and breathing exercises that prepare one for a more advanced approach to their Chinese brush work learnt in earlier courses. Holiday sketchbook

Learn to use a sketchbook when you travel by improving your artistic skills. There are always wonderful things to see and record. Learn to paint birds: painting with watercolour, Western and Chinese brush

Story coaching online

Online, approx 10 weeks. conducted by email and phone using Skype - $350ND
This course is for writers wishing to develop a storyline for the large or small screen, and focuses on the first stage of that process with the guiding principle that 'story is everything'. Story Coaching will be an individual, online course with weekly tasks and outcomes to be achieved. Students will progress through the steps of creative story development from first idea to location, character, time, structure, genre, complete storyline, and intended format. Each student can expect to be engaged on their story work for approximately 10 weeks.
