Monash University Electronic Reserve project.  Hans W. Groenewegen, Debbie Hedger and Iris Radulescu describe Monash University's Electronic Reserve   Project which is at the core of the electronic library project at the University's new Berwick campus. This paper was   written for presentation at CAUSE in Australia '97, Melbourne, 13 -16 April 1997. This article appears in the Web version only of Ariadne.

One change that you may need to mention is that in April this year  we converted the entire image data base (e-reserve and past examination papers) from TIFF to PDF. The conversion took approximately one week, running on an ancient Pentium server, which is about to be replaced by an IBM Netfinity. The PDF collection takes approximately 30% more storage space than the TIFF collection. However we made the change because PDF is now becoming the standard and most people have PDF viewers on their PC's. As you will recall from the Ariadne article, for the TIFF files we had to develop our own viewer.  We are now creating our new images directly in PDF. We are still using an HP SCanjet ADF. it is an older model but the image quality is pretty good and it has a cut sheet feeder. This is an essential feature in our opinion. (update 8 June 2000)

HEDS is a JISC Service run by the University of Hertfordshire to provide a range of services to support the conversion of high volumes of teaching, learning and scholarly materials from paper and other formats to electronic form.  The Digitisation Service will focus on expert advice and consultancy with a total management package to provide complete digitisation services from feasibility assessment to final product delivery. Whilst HEDS is aimed at providing very low cost services to the HE sector, we will provide services at commercial rates for other clients as well.
