Q. It is a source of some mystery to me that the archive can give details about an obscure writer, Oliver Strachey - and yet be quite unable to provde any details about his rather better known brother, Lytton Strachey.

A. The TLS Centenary Archive Online contains biographical details only on contributors to the TLS. Contributors to the TLS were anonymous until 1974 and the de-anonymization of contributors before 1974 is one of the special features of the TLS Centenary Archive Online. Contributor identity is captured from the hand-written, marked-up copies of original TLS issues, from accounting records and editorial diaries. This research is performed within the News International Archive and at Warwick University.

….there are no biographical details available for Lytton and Jane Maria as their contributions were 'only' letters whereas Oliver Strachey contributed three book reviews.

Q.  When I did a subject search for feminism, there was 1 match.  Similarly, for feminist there was 1 match but it wasn't the same article.  What proportion of articles would have subject terms attached?  Is there a list of terms used in the subject index?  How reliable is the subject search?

A.  …. about half the records have a subject attached including all non-fiction book reviews, there's a list of 48,000 subjects at the moment we're still working on.

Q.  Re:  Annual bestseller list.

A.  Thank you very much for your message to our sales office in London which has been forwarded to me as Primary Source Microfilm's contact in the Southern Hemisphere.  The Times Literary Supplement didn't publish an annual bestseller list, at least up to 1980, and hence the information you asked for is also unavailable in the Online archive.

Q.  [This] University teaches so little literature that it is not really a service we'd be interested in for our students.

A.   Although the TLS is mainly covering book reviews, advertisement, articles, journal reviews, letters, obituaries, review articles, short reviews, speeches etc. related to literature, fine arts and theatre you will find a large number of documents related to other subjects.  While searching in the 'subject' field I received the following hits:

Science       1273
Law              1693
Politics         3753
Architecture 1377
Engineering   136
Biology           390

Just try for yourself - the collection might be of interest to your academics and library users.
