Harcourt Health Sciences proposal for CAUL (17 April, 2000)

The Harcourt Health Sciences package includes 60 medical journals from Churchill Livingstone, WB Saunders Ltd., and Baillere Tindall, three of Academic Press' sister companies in the UK. The value of the package in print for 2000 is nearly $27,000 US.

Here's the proposal spreadsheet (updated 18 May to add USyd)

Here's the list of 1999 holdings on which the proposal is based. The list is sorted alphabetically by city

And here's the list of all 60 journals in the package, so each site can double-check our holdings data for accuracy

Please note that the terms for this content package differ in some ways from the existing IDEAL license: 1999 HHS print holdings, at 2000 prices, are used to establish the 2000 Base Price.

The License Premium is 16% of the Base Price, in addition to full renewal of HHS print. The License Premium of 16% established in 2000 will roll forward yearly, with an inflationary price increase that's the same as for the AP content on IDEAL.

There is no DDP (Deep Discount Price) for HHS print, and the 1999 print journals used to establish the Base Price may not be canceled. Many of these journals are owned by societies that prefer an electronic premium added on top of the print rather than the 90%/DDP model adopted by Academic Press. We have acceded to their wishes. E-access to existing 1999 backfiles is included gratis during 2000.

Nineteen of the titles went up on IDEAL last year; the remainder started on IDEAL in 2000. Titles with 1999 backfiles are identified on the clwflyer.doc, above. The minimum License Premium for the collection is $500.

Campuses may decide individually whether to accept the offer. We'll add a one page addendum to the existing IDEAL license, so licensing for HHS content will run concurrent with the Academic Press content.

Two other items:

Journal of Hand Surgery on the HHS list is the UK/Europe edition published by Churchill Livingstone. It differs in editorial content from the American title of the same name, published by WB Saunders. The UK version is offered through the HHS package on IDEAL. E-access to the American version is free to print subscribers for 2000, but you'll need to go to the Saunders web site to register. We're working very hard on offering Mosby and Saunders US journals as content packages for 2001, but there are a number of society-related issues to be resolved.

I don't have the holdings data for University of Sydney yet; I expect to have them the week of April 24, at which time I'll add them to the spreadsheets.

1999 Churchill Livingstone / W.B. Saunders Journals on IDEAL

Message received from Laura Parker, 23 July 1999 Churchill Livingstone/WB Saunders Ltd:  In January 2000, another 40 titles will be added to the 19 CL/WBS titles now on IDEAL.   After January 1 and for the remainder of 2000, this content group will consist of 59 titles. Accordingly, we're withdrawing the 19-title proposals.  In about a month, we'll present a 59-title package, with a January 1 start,  for CAUL's consideration.

Message received from Laura Parker, 20 May 1999 (responses to subsequent questions follow):
Attached are two Excel spreadsheets and one Word document that detail the 1999 Churchill Livingstone/WB Saunders proposal for the CAUL sites participating in IDEAL.

The first spreadsheet (CAUL_CLWBS992A1.xls) shows the 1999 License Fee for each site, and for CAUL collectively.  The License Fee is based on 1998 CL/WBS print holdings, and follows the IDEAL pricing model.   The minimum license fee of $200 for campuses holding no CL/WBS titles applies to 23 sites.  Please note that for this offer, each campus may opt in or out individually.

The Word document (CLaddend.doc) is the generic addendum adding CL/WBS titles to the existing APPEAL contract.  I'll edit this for you to reflect the campuses electing to participate.

The final spreadsheet (CLWBS98Sched3.xls)  shows the list of journals and DDP (Deep Discount Price) for 1999.  Participating campuses will be eligible for DDP on print beginning in 2000.

Message received from Laura Parker, 22 June 1999 (in response to questions regarding campuses/sites and non-subscribers to IDEAL):
When I constructed the spreadsheet for the CL/WBS (Churchill Livingstone/WB Saunders) proposal, I used the Schedule 2A of 16 February 1999 that lists all the CAUL IDEAL licensees for 1999.   I regret that I haven't visited  these campuses, so I can't tell which ones are physically one site.

I can merge some of the columns by adding the license fees together.  So I can add together the University of Queensland sites, for example.

If a university that I list as multiple sites is actually one contiguous site with no CL/WBS subscriptions, the US$200 minimum License Fee would apply for the whole site.  But if the sites are physically separate, even though it's the same university, then the $200 minimum per site will apply.  This license fee is so low, we don't want to group large separate campuses together for one $200 fee. If you can identify for me the campuses of each university that are indeed one site, I can merge the columns.

IDEAL licensees that are not CL/WBS Saunders subscribers can access this content for the $200 minimum license fee.  Non-IDEAL licensees may join the CAUL IDEAL license for this subset of journals only.  Their license fee will be based on their CL/WBS holdings or the $200 minimum, whichever is greater.
