2009 Law Graduate Employment and Summer Clerkship Scheme

Many major Sydney and Canberra law firms participate in the NSW and ACT Graduate Employment and Summer Clerkship Scheme to employ law graduate recruits for commencement in 2010, or penultimate year students for summer clerkship positions over the 2009/2010 summer break.

Participating Firms

Graduate Employment Scheme

A limited number of graduate employment opportunities are advertised through the coordinated Law Graduate Employment Scheme. A list of firms recruiting through this process can be collected from the Careers Centre or downloaded from the Coordinating University's website.

Whilst firms may not be recruiting graduates through this scheme, it is possible that graduate opportunities will be advertised on individual firm websites throughout the year.

Summer Clerkship Scheme

Over 25 firms and government departments will recruit for Summer Clerkship positions based in NSW and Canberra offices through this scheme in 2009. Collect a full list of participating firms from the ANU Careers Centre or visit the www.anu.edu.au/careers

Conditions of Participation

Eligibility to apply for positions through this Scheme may depend on the stage of your law degree you are at. Read the Conditions of Participation available from the Careers Centre for eligibility requirements and the conditions of participation applicable to both applicants and employers. If you require clarification contact the Careers Centre or the relevant firm directly for advice.

Application Process

Each of the participating firms has a different method of receiving applications. Some require you to submit an online Law Employment Application form via cvMail (www.cvmail.com.au) or directly through their firm website while others request a hard copy sent directly to the firm. A list of all participating employers and their application processes is available from the Careers Centre.

Graduate and Summer Clerkship Employment in other States

Many employment opportunities in other States and Territories are offered through similar State-based coordinated employment schemes. Application closing dates and processes for firms participating in the Schemes will differ between States and Territories.

Register on cvMail (www.cvmail.com.au) for information on participating firms and Scheme deadlines for different States or contact firms in specific states directly.

Employment Opportunities with other Firms and Organisations

Only a small number of firms undertake recruitment through this formal scheme. Many other companies and government organisations actively recruit law graduates, and offer vacation/summer clerkship opportunities. Application procedures and deadlines will differ for each. Always check company websites and promotional literature for the most current information about employment opportunities.

Many smaller firms do not participate in a formal employment program but will still offer various employment opportunities to students and graduates. You should contact these firms directly for information on the employment opportunities available.

Also check the ‘Final Year and Graduate’ and ‘Vacation Employment and Work Experience’ job listings on the ANU Careers Centre’s online jobs noticeboard, ANU CareerHub, regularly for recruitment news and job listings.
