Indigenous Community Governance Project

Understanding, Building and Sustaining Effective Governance
in Rural, Remote and Urban Indigenous Communities

Ethics

All ICGP research is being individually negotiated by researchers with participating community organisations and groups. Project researchers are bound by the guidelines set down by their universities’ research ethics committees, by the codes of conduct of their respective Professional Associations, and by their negotiated arrangements with participating community organisations. Project researchers are also informed by the code of conduct set out for research by the Council of AIATSIS.

The Human Research Ethics Committee at the ANU considers the ethical implications of all research proposals, to determine whether or not they are acceptable on ethical grounds. The Committee must comply with national guidelines set out in the National Health and Medical Research Council’s (1999) ‘National Statement on Ethical Conduct in Research Involving Humans’. The ANU has also developed a statement on ‘Guidelines for Responsible Research Practice with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders’.

For each case study in which they are involved, ANU researchers on the Project submit separate research proposals to the ANU Ethics Committee for ethical clearance. Project researchers attached to other universities similarly submit and must receive ethical clearance from their respective institution’s ethics committee, before they conduct field research. All university ethics applications must be supported by the participating community organisations.

Any queries about the ethical conduct of this Project can be made to the ANU Human Research Ethics Committee on:
