Structure

APHCRI operates as a "hub and spoke" model.

The hub is based at the ANU and comprises the Director, together with other academic and administrative staff. The ANU is responsible for governance of the Institute, with the Director reporting to the Vice-Chancellor.

Spokes are the priority-driven projects and programs of work funded by APHCRI. It is envisaged that spokes will:

  • Vary in location, identity and duration depending on the projects and programs funded by the Institute
  • Identify a Coordinating Investigator to be responsible for interactions with the APHCRI Hub
  • Conduct research according to the protocol or plan submitted for funding and approved by the RAB
  • Liaise and interact with the APHCRI hub as required for the monitoring of research projects and programs
  • Develop and implement dissemination strategies for APHCRI-sponsored research projects and programs.

The Research Advisory Board (RAB) is a key component of the APHCRI structure. The Chair and members of the RAB are agreed by both the ANU and the Minister for Health and Ageing and appointed by the ANU. Members are individuals with a range of perspectives relevant to primary health care. They are individual appointments, rather than appointed as representatives or nominees of organizations or groups. The Director of APHCRI is a member of the RAB. Professor John Marley chairs the RAB. There are nine other members. The RAB makes three key decisions. It identifies the topics APHCRI will research, the composition of Expert Review Committees to consider applications for funding and the allocation of funds from the Australian Government's commitment of $10 million over the next four years.
