Internship Programs The ANUgreen Sustainability Internship program is designed to give students experience working on campus sustainability projects within the ANU Sustainability Office (ANUgreen). Students work on projects ranging from energy and water conservation initiatives, behaviour change campaigns/marketing, project management and green building studies. Students from all disciplines are encouraged to apply. Each internship is valued at $1500 and requires the intern to work in the ANUgreen office for a total of seven days. Projects can be undertaken during term time or during holidays and semester breaks. At the end of the internship, the intern will provide ANUgreen with a report detailing the outcomes of the project. Students may be able to use the report or some aspect of the project for assessment in a relevant course. It is the student’s responsibility to check with course conveners to determine if this is feasible. A competitive application process is held each semester. The application procedure includes drafting a 350 word essay explaining how an ANU Sustainability Internship fits in with the student’s academic and career goals and how their academic skills and qualifications can contribute to the particular project they are interested in. This essay, along with a CV (including courses and results), should be sent to the coordinator. 2009 Semester Two Internship Projects In 2007, International Alliance of Research Universities (IARU) partners ANU and Yale began a campus sustainability exchange program with ANU sending three interns to Yale, and Yale sending two interns to ANU for six weeks each. In 2008, the program expanded to include an exchange with IARU partners at Oxford University. And in 2009 students will have the opportunity to visit ETH Zurich, National University of Singapore, Peking University, University of Cambridge, University of Copenhagen, University of Oxford, University of Tokyo and Yale University. Students at each location live in campus accommodation and work closely with professionals at each of the universities to support the development and implementation of campus sustainability projects. Selected students live in on-campus housing and work in the university’s sustainability office for the duration of the program. Project topics range from energy conservation, transport and waste reduction to student outreach and community engagement. The internship offers paid travel expenses and a stipend for food and living expenses. A competitive application process is held once a year in March/April. Interested applicants must submit a CV (including academic results) and a 350-word essay describing how this opportunity fits into their studies and how their experience can contribute to the work of a campus sustainability office. The GreenSteps Environmental Management Training program is a nationally recognised environmental management training program that gives students the skills to act as environmental change agents in the workplace.
