Greening Your Lab

The ANU Green Labs Program is designed to support ANU staff in their attempts to make their workplace more environmentally friendly

The ANU is a research-intensive university with a lot of the work taking place in its laboratories. The goal of environmental management for laboratory workers should be to minimise environmental impact without compromising the scientific quality of research.

Simple steps for greening your lab

• Promote and practice the philosophy that "the drain is just for rain"
  Follow proper waste disposal practices—nothing but rain should go down a stormwater drain.
• Report leaks and take shorter showers
  You'll help conserve water, one of Australia's precious resources.
• Recycle waste paper, cardboard, rigid plastic, cans and glass containers
• Recycle toner cartridges and use remanufactured or refilled cartridges
• Switch off computer monitors
  When leaving your desk for more than 15 minutes, switch off your monitor to save energy.
• Switch off lights
  If you are the last to leave the lab, or are going out for more than 30 minutes, turn off the lights.
