* There are currently 11 million cars and trucks in Australia consuming about 26 billion litres of fuel a year and emitting approximately 71million tonnes of C02 into the atmosphere!

* 32 tonnes of greenhouse gases are emitted for each Australian annually- this is one of the highest per capita greenhouse gas emissions in the world.

* The average Australian car emits 4.5 tonnes of C02 per year!

* If the ANU changed all its 6 cylinder vehicles to 4 cylinder vehicles, we would emit 174 tonnes less C02 per year and consume 28% less fuel!

Transport is a significant contributor to the University's greenhouse gas emissions — in 2004 the University's car fleet consumed 404,000 litres of petrol and emitted 1,026 tonnes of greenhouse gas. The ANU has committed itself to improving its environmental performance by joining the Federal Government's Greenhouse Challenge program, pledging to actively work to reduce our greenhouse emissions. The ANU also offsets the emissions of its car fleet through the purchase of renewable energy offsets from Climate Friendly, an Australian based carbon-offsetting company (www.climatefriendly.com).

If it's short take a walk

Before jumping in the car consider whether you really need to drive. Each litre of petrol consumed emits 2.5kg of greenhouse gases, and this rises significantly when a car is cold, so if it's short, take a walk
If you need to go further why not ride a bike, catch a bus, get a lift, scoot, ride a skateboard, roller blade, do something different — have a bit of fun getting around.

Look after your car and drive efficiently

A well-maintained car, driven carefully, can use significantly less petrol (and so have a smaller environmental impact) than the same left unmaintained. The way you drive the car also has an impact on the car's fuel consumption.
