[20]   HE TAKES A BASKET AND WALKS TOWARD ONE OF THE TREES
[21]   HE CLIMBS THE PALM AND PREPARES TO TAP
[22]   A CLOSER SHOT.  HE CLEANS THE TAPPING BASKETS, CUTS THE 
         END OF A MALE STALK, TIES THE BASKET UNDERNEATH TO 
         CATCH THE DRIPPING SAP AND CLIMBS DOWN AGAIN.
[23]   HE POURS LONTAR JUICE FROM ONE BASKET INTO ANOTHER

POEM 3:  (V/O  Shots 19-21)

Malesi:
  "To descend into the ocean,
  Lay a trail of Lontar leaves in the ocean.
  And to go down into the sea,
  Place a path of gewang leaves in the sea."
  Thus the Shark, 
  The Great Lord of the Sea,
  And the Crocodile,
  The Chief Hunter of the Ocean,
  Directed and led
  The sons of the Sun and Moon
  To their house decked with turtle shells
  And their home roofed with rayfish tails.

  They prepared rice in the Ocean 
  And they pounded millet in the Sea. 
  They cooked in boiling water 
  And they roasted on a smoking fire. 
  They ate but hid some away. 
  They drank but put some aside 
  To carry to the Sun and Moon.

  As the sons of the Sun and Moon emerged on dry land,
  They saw Lontars being tapped.
  They drank some juice and thought it tasty,
  Tart and sweet.
  Then the Great Lord of the Sea spoke
  And the Chief Hunter of the Ocean said:
    "The Oceans-sea's drink is tasty, Tart and Sweet."
  And the sons of the Sun and Moon replied
    "The Sun and Moon's drink is sour and tasteless."
  So they poured fresh Lontar juice 
  And carried it to the Sun and Moon.

  The Sun ate and found it sweet;
  The Moon drank and found it good.
  Then the Sun spoke and the Moon said:
    "Let us find a way to marry with the Ocean.
     Let us bridge a path to wed with the Sea."
  So they cradled the daughter of the Sun
  and gave her to wed with the Ocean.
  And they carried the child of the Moon
  and gave her to Marry with the Sea."

  Are tied together
  So they drip their essence
  into a single  bucket."

Malesi:
  "Long ago the Man Nggeo-Nggeo Sain
  And the Boy Fula-Fula Liun 
  Brought an adz from out of the sea 
  To notch the lontars on dry land.
  The two began in Ndao, in the west
  And then proceeded to notch trees
  Until they arrived here in Termanu.
  But when they finished notching the lontars of Termanu,
  Their adze was blunt.
  So they returned to the Sea
  And never came back to complete their work.
  So, to the east, leafstalks are used
  Instead of notches for climbing."
