Time Commitment

Ranging from 1 hour to 1 year

ANU Alumni Relations in collaboration with the ANU Academic Skills & Learning Centre are calling for volunteers to take part in alumni-hosted English language conversation groups for non-English speaking background students.

We all know that learning another language is tough. It takes a lot of time and practice. But many students tell us that there is actually little opportunity to speak English outside of lectures and tutorials. We want to help them get the most out of their time at ANU. Having a conversation led by an ANU alumnus can help students enhance their fluency, build confidence and learn more about local life.

These fun and rewarding groups are designed for students to practice their English in an informal and relaxed environment. Alumni volunteers facilitate discussion on a range of topics, encouraging and supporting the students while passing on their experience and knowledge.

The benefits to ANU students are numerous:

  • It helps to increase speaking fluency in English
  • It can boost their confidence to participate at university
  • They can connect with others and make friends
  • They can learn about your ANU experience and get 'insider' knowledge

For alumni volunteers, these conversation groups:

  • Are a fun and rewarding way to give back to ANU and its students
  • Help you to learn more about other cultures
  • Contribute to making ANU and Canberra a great place to study for international students

No prior experience is necessary and full training is provided. A current ACT Working with Vulnerable People (WWVP) registration is required.

Get in touch with ANU Alumni Relations for more information and to register your interest.

Why we want you?

As a volunteer you provide support to our alumni and current students.  Having your support ensures that ANU can host events of international standard. The University would not be able to operate on such a global scale without the help of you and your fellow volunteers.  We thank you!

What you will gain from volunteering!

Volunteering keeps you in touch with the university, current students and alumni.  You will often be exposed to students, alumni and guests of international standard, with great ideas, doing fantastic research.

How you can get involved?

Volunteering opportunities range from one-off occasions such as assisting at a 3MT event to occasions that require a longer commitment, such as being a social media ambassador.  We can also match an opportunity to your location, skillset, interest and available time.  You could even decide to host and sponsor an event.
Volunteering provides an excellent opportunity to expand your network and enrich your experience as an alumnus. IT has the added bonus of helping students make life-changing career decisions through their association with you.

How will you know what's available?

We have a perpetual list of opportunities - some are urgent and have a use by date.  These are listed in the Featured opportunities table.

Stay tuned to this page! We update our Featured opportunities monthly.

If you are looking for a volunteer opportunity for an extended period of time, please see our list of projects and click through to the description to find more information.
