Humanities researchers look to future

More than 100 former and current researchers and students from the Research School of Humanities have said a fond farewell to Old Canberra House ahead of the School's move to the Sir Roland Wilson Building. The researchers and students met at the iconic building by the lake on 3 April 2009 to say goodbye to the old building, but also to look to the future. The move to the Sir Roland Wilson Building later this year will bring it a little closer to the rest of the ANU College of Arts and Social Sciences.

"We are sad to leave Old Canberra House, a building that we love and appreciate, and the Stanner Building, which was designed for the Centre for Cross-Cultural Research and the Humanities Research Centre [which merged in 2007 to form RSH]," said RSH Director Professor Howard Morphy. He added that when the constituent parts of RSH moved to Old Canberra House in 2000 that the area was viewed as removed from the centre of the University, remembered by many people as the former University staff club, a "delightful place to imbibe at the end of the day."

"I hope that we helped move it closer to the heart of the University," Professor Morphy said. "As a community we are all looking forward to the new opportunities and challenges that the move will bring." Professor Morphy said that in its new home RSH would develop a Digital Humanities Hub to consolidate the University's e-research strategy. He also welcomed sharing the new building with the Australian National Dictionary Centre, which became part of RSH in the 2007 but had remained geographically distant.

Old Canberra House is set to become part of the new Crawford School of Economics and Government complex.
