Q: What does 'alumni' mean? A: The word alumni refers to graduates of a university.
Q: Who is an Alumnus or Alumna? A: An Alumnus is a male, Alumna is a female, who has received a degree, diploma or certificate from a university. At ANU, it could be for an undergraduate or a graduate award. Upon graduation they are automatically added to the Alumni database and are part of the alumni community for life! No registration is required as graduate details are made available to the Alumni Office after each Graduation. All graduates are recorded, even those that graduated very early when ANU was first established! It does not matter if the person also holds an additional degree, diploma or certificate from another institution.
Q: How do I pronounce the word ‘Alumni'? A: Those who studied Latin are used to pronouncing ‘Alumni' to rhyme with ‘room' and ‘key' However according to the Oxford Shorter English Dictionary, the word has been anglicised and is pronounced correctly to rhyme with ‘thumb' and ‘eye'.
Q: Where do graduates go after uni?! A: ANU is immensely proud of its Alumni who have gone on to live and work in places as diverse as Argentina and Zambia, and everywhere in between. The ANU Alumni community consists of over 65,000 members, which grows by 3,000 every year!
Q: Who are some notable ANU Alumni? A: Over the past 60 years our graduates have formed careers as some of Australia's foremost politicians, including our Prime Minister The Hon. Kevin Rudd and his wife and one third of the Cabinet. Prominent legal practitioners, top creative artists, leading international businessmen and women, successful professional musicians and world renowned leaders in health and scientific research form our prestigious ANU Alumni community.
Q: Where is ANU Alumni? As a graduate can I drop into the Alumni Office to say 'hi'!? A: Yes, absolutely! The Alumni Office is situated in the Marketing Office in the Old Administration Building I at The Australian National University in Canberra ACT Australia. This building is in between the College of Law and Menzies Library. The Alumni Office staff are always happy to meet with you or to assist with your enquiries!
Q: What can ANU Alumni do for me? A: ANU Alumni provides lifelong opportunities for alumni to stay connected with one another and with The Australian National University. Our goals are to provide services that will enhance professional and personal growth and to foster alumni involvement with ANU. The Alumni Office is proud to provide an array of events, benefits and services to our alumni.
Q: Do I have to pay for membership with ANU Alumni? A: No, you automatically become a member after you graduate.
Q: How do I register for an ANU Alumni event? A: Simply go to the Events page and click ‘Register for this event' under the events you wish to attend.
Q: I'm a graduate and would like to promote my upcoming exhibition or concert - can the Alumni Office help? A: Yes - A relevant notice can also be added to the attractive Alumni E-News that is distributed bi-monthly as well as added to the Alumni website! Simply email details to
Q: I am a graduate and have just received a great award - should I tell ANU Alumni?! A: Yes! Please let the Alumni Office know about your great achievements by emailing - you may even receive a congratulatory notice in the next edition of ANU Alumni E-News!
Q: I would like my profile to be included in Alumni E-News and on the website - how do I submit mine? A: Please complete the Profile Submission Form - your profile will then be kept by the Alumni Office until required. You will be contacted via email should your profile be considered for an ANU Alumni E-News edition.
Q: We would like to hold a reunion for a particular group of alumni. Can the Alumni Office help in event management and promotion? A: Yes! The Alumni Office enjoys arranging to meet with you to discuss your alumni event intentions. At this meeting you will be provided with an Alumni Event Management Package and Alumni E-News Schedule to assist with your event management and promotion. Events are also listed on the Alumni website for all to access, including those Alumni who have not been able to be contacted via personal invitation (due to their lack of contact updates).
