Professor Jan Provis graduated from UNSW with a PhD in visual neuroscience in 1980, and was a Research Fellow in the Department of Clinical Ophthalmology, University of Sydney, between 1980 and 1988, when she was appointed to a lectureship in Anatomy. Jan was promoted to Associate Professor at University of Sydney in 1999. In 2004 Jan moved a small research team to ANU where she was at first a Senior Fellow in the Research School of Biology, and Associate Director of the ARC Centre of Excellence in Vision Science (2011-13). In 2008 Jan was appointed Professor of Anatomy in ANU Medical School, and Associate Dean (Teaching and Learning) in 2012. She holds the honorary title of Professor at University of Sydney.
Jan is a research Group Leader in the JCSMR investigating Retinal Development and Ageing, and is known internationally for her work on retinal development and the blinding disease, age-related macular degeneration. Over her career Jan has published more than 100 research papers. Jan Chairs the CMBE Early Career Academic Development Committee, is an advocate for women in science, and a mentor to several early and mid-career academics.
