Election to Council of two academic staff members

Invitation to nominate

The current term of the academic staff members of the ANU Council, Professor Jan Provis and Professor Tim Senden, will expire on 29 September 2018. It is therefore necessary to hold an election in order to elect two members of the Council by the academic staff of the University. Of these two members, one must have duties with a predominant research focus ('the Academic staff (Institute) member") and one must have duties involving both teaching and research ("the Academic staff (Faculties) member").

For the purposes of this election a member of the academic staff, as defined in the Council (Elections) Rules, is a person holding a full-time or part-time standard or fixed term academic staff appointment in the University on pay day 14 June 2018 and who was paid a salary by the University on that day.The members elected will hold office for a term of two years from 30 September 2018.

Nominations are invited from eligible members of the academic staff for election. Each nomination must be made in writing by two members of the academic staff qualified to vote at the election and must contain the written consent of the candidate to the nomination.  Subject to these requirements, no particular form of nomination is prescribed, but a specimen nomination form is available from this webpage. Nominations open at 9:00am on Monday 18 June 2018.

In addition, to enable candidate details to be made available to the electorate via the web, nominations should include a biographical and policy statement from the candidate (no more than 200 words) and a recent photograph. By submitting these statements, candidates consent to them being publishing on the ANU webpage.

Nominations (along with the candidates biographical and policy statement and photograph) should be emailed to returning.officer@anu.edu.au (or posted or delivered to The Returning Officer, Corporate Governance & Risk Office, Room 1.07A, Chancelry (Bldg 10), Australian National University, Canberra, ACT 2601). Nominations must reach the Returning Officer by 12:00pm on Monday 9 July 2018.

Information session

An information session will be held to explain in more detail to interested staff the role of the Council, what it means to be a Council member and the election process. The session will be held on Monday 25 June 2018, at 10:30am, in the RC Mills Room, Level 4, Chancelry Building. RSVP is not required.

Balloting

If there is more than one nomination for each position, an electronic ballot will be held. All staff employed as full-time or part-time standard or fixed term members of the academic staff and were paid a salary on Thursday 14 June 2018 are eligible to vote for each of the candidates.

A roll of members of staff eligible for nomination or to vote in the election of academic staff to Council may be consulted at the Corporate Governance & Risk Office, Room 1.07A in the Chancelry (Bldg 10).  The provisions of the Australian National University Act 1991 and the Statute and Rules concerning the election may be consulted on this webpage.
