Teaching Package

This page provides materials to help with using Real Time Relativity in teaching:
  • Real Time Relativity Software
  • Manual for a three hour lab, including an educational rationale for the lab.
  • Evaluation tools.
  • Lecture notes.
  • Additional resources.

Real Time Relativity Software

The simulation software around which this teaching package is organised. Available for Windows and Mac OSX systems.

Lab Manual

The manual has been used in three hour labs at the Australian National University. It is based on the manual used at the University of Queensland. It has been refined over several years of use at both univeristies. The learning that is being sought is described in the Educational Rationale.

Evaluation Tools

We are conducting an ongoing study of the effectiveness of the Real Time Relativity simulation for teaching relativity. Below are some of the evaluation instruments we have used. They were administered before and after students comleted the RTR lab. More information about these instruments, and preliminary results, are in our paper "Teaching Special Relativity using Virtual Reality"

Lecture notes

The following lecture notes were used for the ANU lecture course accompanying the Real Time Relativity lab. They include a section on relativistic optics.

Additional resources

The following web site provides an introduction to special relativity, including to relativistic optics.
