JOBS ____________ POSTDOCTORAL FELLOWSHIP TIME AND FREQUENCY 39K to 45K + Superannuation CSIRO DIVISION OF APPLIED PHYSICS Lindfield, NSW The CSIRO National Measurement Laboratory's Time and Frequency Section is looking for a Postdoctoral Fellow to join a team developing a new microwave frequency standard based on trapped ytterbium ions. The successful applicant will need a PhD degree about to be awarded or awarded within last three years, in Physics or Electrical Engineering. The appointee will have research experience in one or more of the following or related areas: laser, microwave or radiofrequency coherent atomic spectroscopy, ion or atom trapping, optical second-harmonic generation and laser cooling, and numerical modelling of these phenomena. The successful applicant's ability to demonstrate the capacity to work as part of a team and contribute to team goals is essential. Communicating effectively at all levels, both orally and written, is also important to the position. Additionally, experience with equipment such as stable microwave sources, stabilized lasers, diode lasers and computer controlled systems would be an advantage. The appointment will commence as soon as the position can be filled and will be available in the first instance until July 1998. Subject to the availability of funding, the duration of the fellowship will be extended. The Laser Physics Group at Otago has a research programme in optical parametric oscillators, tunable vibronic lasers, dye-based solid state lasers and nonlinear organic media. The successful candidate will contribute to this programme, and to external contract research. Candidates are expected to be strongly self-motivated and have postdoctoral or PhD research experience in a related area. Salary: Appointment will be as a postdoctoral fellow at $NZ40,500 per annum.
