BACKLIGHT is
a four-dimensional raytracer similar to the popular
freeware Persistence of Vision Raytracer (POVRAY). BACKLIGHT is not a modified
version of POVRAY, but does use a modified version of
the POVRAY Scene Description Language.
Programmed
in C++, BACKLIGHT currently operates on both Windows
95/98/NT PCs and UNIX/IRIX workstations. BACKLIGHT
does not use OpenGL or similar graphics systems,
requiring only standard C/C++ libraries.
Like all
high-quality raytracing systems, BACKLIGHT does not
operate in real time, though real-time visualization
systems are available - see http://www.tat.physik.uni-tuebingen.de/~weiskopf/vr/. Videos are rendered on the
Australian National University Supercomputer Facility
(ANUSF) Silicon Graphics Power Challenge
supercomputer.
