The Head-up Display

THE HEAD-UP DISPLAY

The image below is a broadcast-quality image showing full colour depth and resolution of video images. Superimposed over the image is the Head-up Display (HUD) which displays vital information to the viewer, allowing fuller understanding of the images.

The HUD has three main components:
The speed of the camera as a fraction of the speed of light is displayed in the top right corner of the image. This speed is always between 0 and 1.
The Lorentz factor is displayed in the lower left corner of the image. This value indicates the extent of relativistic effects present in the images. It varies between 1 and infinity.

The map occupies the lower right corner of the image. It details the properties of the 'camera' which is observing the scene.
The map background is a picture of the scene from a different position as it would appear to a comoving observer.
The velocity vector (green) indicates the direction of motion of the camera, and the length of the vector is proportional to the speed of the camera. The origin of the vector is the location of the camera in the scene.
The view pyramid (blue) indicates the direction and field of view of the camera. The apex is at the location of the camera. The four lines from the apex are the vectors of light at the corners of the image in the camera frame. The pyramid defines the field of view if the camera was stationary with respect to the scene.
