Supervision for Research Students at the National Europe Centre

The National Europe Centre is a centre of research excellence at The Australian National University that provides a unique environment for both undergraduate honours and postgraduate students researching the challenging intricacies of European Studies. Our students are integrated into a small team of scholars with expertise in a range of areas from political science, law, economics, agricultural and environmental policy to cultural history. We also host Summer Scholars and participants of The Australian National Internship Program (ANIP). The Centre organises a unique program of conferences and seminars in European Studies and our students benefit from regular exchanges with staff and Visiting Fellows. Supervisors and their Research Interests

Professor Simon Bronitt (Director)
EU law, human rights, terrorism and criminal justice, environmental law and policy

Dr Ben Wellings (Deputy Director and Acting Director June-December 2007)
Nationalism and national identity in Britain and the European Union, comparative nationalisms, contemporary British and European history, nationalism in Australia, history and nationalism

Karen Hussey (Postdoctoral Fellow)
European integration, global environmental governance and international environmental diplomacy, European and Australian environmental policy, agri-environment issues in Australia and the EU, EU-Australia relations

Judith Jones (Research Fellow)
Environmental law and policy, gene technology, risk regulation, science-based regulation, agricultural sustainability and regulation

Don Kenyon (Distinguished Visiting Fellow)
Trade and economic sphere (especially relating to Australia-EU issues), Australia in the WTO, including Australia’s participation in WTO trade negotiations and Australia’s role in dispute settlement issues, agriculture negotiations (both in the WTO and with the EU)

Dr Christa Knellwolf(Adjunct Associate Professor)
Early modern literature and culture (17th to 19th century), the formation of European national identity, European exploration and colonisation, critical theory.

Graduate Students and PhD Scholars

The Centre organises challenging interdisciplinary seminars, workshops, conferences and research projects while cultivating close contacts with the diplomatic community. It hosts an internationally recognised fellowship program and actively liaises with European studies programs throughout Australia. This stimulating environment is ideal for PhD and MPhil students wishing to research a broad range of topics on European law, politics, economics, literature and culture. Experienced scholars from various departments of the Australian National University complement the Centre’s small and enthusiastic team to ensure the highest standard of supervision.

Short Courses

The National Europe Centre is also committed to teaching short courses that provide a comprehensive overview of seminal aspects of contemporary Europe. These tailor-made courses are designed to reflect the needs and interests of clients in an academic, business or diplomatic environment.

Through the Centre's close co-operation with the Australian Universities Europe Network (AUEN), it can offer taught courses on a broad range of topics. The following list is a representative selection:
