The National Europe Centre at the Australian National University welcomes applications from HDR (PhD and MPhil) students and researchers (within 5 years of PhD award) for the 2008 RENZA Writing Retreat, which will be held in Kioloa ANU Campus, South Coast, NSW, 2 – 7 November 2008.

The Writing Retreat is a 4-day intensive interdisciplinary residential program specifically designed for HDR (PhD and MPhil) students and researchers (within 5 years of PhD award).
The aims of the Writing Retreat include:

  • Promoting comparative research on Europe at New Zealand and Australian Universities
  • Assisting researchers on Europe to obtain academic support
  • Bringing researchers on Europe together with experienced academics in the field
  • Sharing experiences
  • Developing support networks.

The program will draw on the expertise of researchers from a range of disciplinary backgrounds from within the Centre, as well as scholars from Australia, New Zealand and Europe.

Topics that will be discussed during the Writing Retreat include:
How to:

  • Conduct Comparative Research
  • Establish links to European Universities
  • Conduct fieldwork in Europe
  • Write a comparative work
  • Manage travel and the thesis budget
  • Promote comparative work

APPLICATION PROCESS
Adopting an inquiry-based learning model (see http://www.anu.edu.au/CEDAM/ilearn/index.html), the program requires applicants to prepare a proposal outlining their research.

PROGRAM
Guided by academic mentors, participants in the program will have the opportunity to work together in small groups in order to discuss and further develop their ideas. This exercise will provide them with an excellent opportunity to develop their research, writing and funding proposals further.

The first three days of the program will consist of intensive writing time, lunchtime seminars and afternoon workshop sessions. The learning environment is designed to facilitate writing with opportunities for peer review and discussion with experts in their respective fields.

The final day of the Writing Retreat will be constructed as a symposium for disseminating research undertaken at the retreat. There will be four sessions at which students and early career researchers will present their research in short presentations followed by discussion.

The program is open to HDR (PhD and MPhil) students and researchers (within 5 years of PhD award) from any field or discipline. It is designed for a maximum of 15 participants.

ELIGIBILITY
Any student enrolled, or academic employed, full or part-time, at a University in New Zealand or Australia.

COST
All costs of tuition, accommodation, activities and lunches will be met by the National Europe Centre. Participants will also be provided with grants towards the cost of return travel to their place of residence. Students must pay a $100 non refundable administration fee, payable on acceptance of the offer of a place.
