Core_Computer Studies: TIFF

The acronym TIFF stands for Tagged Image File Format.

The files are recognizable by their file extension, which is .tiff.

TIFFs are bitmap images which means that the quality of the image is dependent on the image file's resolution. TIFF format was invented for the purpose of scanning which explains why this non-native image format is highly versatile. Most graphics programs can save an image file in this format. They are ideal for importing into Illustrator and page-layout programs.

One of their strengths is that unlike other formats, you are not limited to one color mode. You can save a TIFF file in either bitmap, index color, grayscale, RGB or CMYK color mode. This is a very handy feature.

You can save TIFF files for both Macintosh and Windows systems.
