Core_Computer Studies: Image Files and Formats

There is a very large number of different file formats for images movies and animations, sound etc. Different file types have their own qualities. Some file types store compressed images, others can only hold files of a specific bit depth and resolution. There are also native files which contain information specific only to one application.

 

The following is a list of most common file types.

Bitmap

BMP: suffix is.BMP- Standard Windows graphic file (Uncompressed)

EPS : suffix is .eps

GIF: suffix is .gif

JPEG: suffix is .jpeg or .pjg

PDF: suffix is .pdf

PICT: suffix is.pict

Quicktime Movie: Mac or Windows Digitized Movie

Raster

RLE suffix .RLE Standard Windows graphic file (Compressed)

TIFF

Vector
