Students from all Workshops are involved in the Art Theory Workshop program. Through the courses it offers, the Art Theory Workshop aims to develop students’ analytical skills and to encourage their participation in critical debates concerning historical and contemporary theory and practice in the visual arts, craft and design. The Workshop endeavours to keep the range of courses flexible in response to expressions of student interest and staffing expertise.

Art Theory staff include artists and academics in keeping with the School’s commitment to integrate theory and practice at all levels.

Lectures and tutorials are held in the School's lecture theatre, Conference Room, or in the Library Seminar Room. These facilities provide equipment for slide, video and data projection. The Art Theory Workshop also makes use of the School's proximity to the national collecting institutions such as the National Gallery of Australia and the National Library of Australia, to provide students with direct experience of images and objects. At present Core Studies (First Year) theory classes are held at the National Gallery of Australia.

Conferences
The Workshop provides a forum for discussion on critical issues in the visual arts by hosting conferences and seminars. Often linked to the School's major events, exhibitions or visiting artists and scholars programs and open to the general public and school community, these seminars have a vital role in contributing to visual arts debates.
