TAPESTRY

This is a photograph of tapestry bobbins, wound with wool and ready for weaving.
An image of the tapestry 'Pilliga' by textile and fibre artist Leonie Andrews.

Tapestry is an ancient form of weaving. The warp (or vertical threads) are wound around a simple frame. The weft (or horizontal threads are woven through the warp threads to create the design or pattern.

Like much of my other work I find the landscape a great inspiration. Most of my ideas for tapestry come from sketches I have made while in the bush.

See one of my tapestries being made.

This page shows some tapestry samplers of color blending techniques.

This tapestry is called 'Pilliga', its design is based on an oil pastel sketch I did of a local wattle, Acacia gladiiformis, while camping in the Pilliga Scrub.
Technique: woven tapestry, wool and acrylic, 2002

Tapestry bobbins wound with wool and ready for weaving. The brass point is used to beat the weft threads down.
