Textiles is one of the most exciting and diverse areas of contemporary artistic practice embracing new technologies, opportunities and career paths. The applications of textiles cover a broad range from a design-oriented emphasis, incorporating textile works for fashion or interior design, to expressive art forms which may encompass unique works, installation, and performance. Growth areas of employment for graduates are in art in public places, digital imaging and website design, environment and heritage interpretation, community cultural development and curatorial work.

The School of Art Textiles Workshop provides courses at both undergraduate and graduate levels and facilities for students wishing to explore the broad range of textile studies, preparing them for careers in all aspects of the visual arts, design, and related areas. With the expertise of its academic staff, advanced technical facilities, and location close to Australia’s national collecting institutions, the ANU School of Art Textiles Workshop provides an excellent environment for study and research.

Applications are welcome from school leavers and mature age students Australia wide and internationally. All prospective students are strongly encouraged to visit or make contact with the Workshop to discuss the various courses with staff. Students are especially encouraged to visit on ANU School of Art Open Day, to talk with staff and students, see the Workshop facilities as well as exhibitions of staff and student work.

Prospective students are interviewed and must present a folio of recent work. The folio can consist of drawings, sketchbooks, textiles and other forms of art and design, reflecting the applicant's interests and abilities. Applicants from overseas who are unable to attend an interview will be asked to provide evidence of their creative ability in the form of slides, photographs or digital images.
