MONIQUE VAN NIEUWLAND
CURRICULUM VITAE

I was born in the Netherlands and grew up in a large family where birth and death occurred in cycles. As a teenager I worked as a baby sitter as well as an aid in an old people's nursing home. After obtaining my High School Certificate I studied at the Kopse Hof in Nymegen, a Tertiary Social Educative Course with emphasis on visual arts, drama and music. I cut these studies short and for a few years worked different jobs and attended several arts and weaving workshops. In 1978 I met my Australian partner and three years later I emigrated with our first born baby to Australia.

In 1983 I started my B.A.Visual Arts (Textiles) studies at the Canberra School of Art at the Australian National University. From the time of my graduation in 1988 until 1998 I facilitated many community arts projects in the Canberra region as well as exhibiting my own work. Some of the community arts pojects were set within health facilities and dealt with issues of health, living and dying.

Questions raised during these experiences inspired me to start my Masters(phil) Visual-Textiles studies. I am now combining part-time work (Technical Officer in the Textiles Workshop) and Master studies at the Canberra School of Art.
