Course Overview:
Students work to a program of projects which introduce them to a range of skills and conceptual issues designed to provide a solid basis for continuing studies.

Course Commitment
15 hours per week lectures, tutorials, critiques and supervised studio practice and 4 hours per week independent studio practice; plus 5 hours online projects.
Learning Objectives
At the completion of this course, students should be able to:
- demonstrate familiarity with a range of processes, relevant new technologies, material uses and material properties and indicate a developing understanding of relationships between these in making art developing design.
- indicate an emerging familiarity with, and skill in, two and three dimensional design and construction
- demonstrate increased observational skills as well as imagination in execution of projects
- show an understanding of key historical traditions and conventions across art/design areas, and their relevance to contemporary art/craft/design practice
- show an awareness of both western and non-western conventions of representation
- demonstrate an understanding of the role of contextual and studio research processes in visual art/design
- indicate a developing ability to manage their own learning processes individually and within a shared working environment
- show awareness of personal and shared responsibilities of the artist/designer vis a vis OH&S requirements and procedures and studio management
- creatively apply skills in a web-based learning environment.

Course Problems
If you have problems concerning a course you are taking, it is best in the first instance to speak directly to the lecturer concerned. You can also take up your concerns with the Head of School. Many courses and programs have student representatives, and you may find it useful to direct your concerns via them. The ANU Students’ Association (ANUSA) has two Student Representatives in the College of Arts and Social Sciences who can help you with problems or concerns that you may have with your course or degree. They can help you by talking to lecturers or tutors on your behalf, help you address your concerns with assessment, and give you advice about appeals procedures. They also sit on a number of College Committees, so let them know if you have complaints or suggestions for improvement about your courses or about facilities and services more generally.
