ANU,
Faculty of Arts, School of Art
STUDENT EXHIBITION POLICY |
|
1. Undergraduate external exhibitions
1.1 The School does not encourage students to exhibit their work off campus
during their undergraduate years unless the exhibition is part of an approved
School activity. For academic reasons, work produced for exhibition purposes
may not always be in the best interests of student progress, and in any
event should be seen as work done under guidance. Permission for the external
exhibition of work produced while a student at the School of Art ultimately
rests with the Director. Failure to secure approval/permission may compromise
subsequent examination/assessment processes.
1.2 Exceptions to the policy may include exhibitions or entry to competitions
coordinated under the auspices of Workshops/Studios and with staff supervision,
incorporating specific educational objectives, a Professional Practice
course project, or a public relations/recruitment function, or representing
the School in the wider community, with the approval of the Director.
The ANU School of Art must be acknowledged in all such exhibitions and
competitions.
1.3 All publications (in catalogues, cvs, acknowledgements, video credits,
etc) associated with such events must acknowledge the student’s
current candidature and any relevant support in an appropriate way. For
instance: “Candidate for [name of degree], School of Art, Australian
National University”. And, if supported by a scholarship, indicate:
“Supported by [name of scholarship] Scholarship, or Award, as appropriate”.
2.
Postgraduate external exhibitions
2.1 Participation in external exhibitions and projects while a postgraduate
student is a matter for prior consultation and approval by Supervisors.
A number of factors need to be taken into account in considering such
requests: priority to the program and commitment of time, exposure of
work which may subsequently be up for review or assessment, the possibility
of the sale of work which may be required for assessment, and the use
of School resources for purposes other than the approved research project.
Discussion with your Supervisor and the Graduate Studies Convenor before
such commitments are entered into is required. Permission for the external
exhibition of work produced while a student at the School of Art ultimately
rests with the Director. Failure to secure approval/permission may compromise
the examination process.
2.2 All publications
(in catalogues, cvs, acknowledgements, video credits, etc) associated
with such events must acknowledge the student’s current candidature
and any relevant support in an appropriate way. For instance: “Candidate
for PhD [or other graduate degree], Graduate Studies in Visual Arts, School
of Art, Australian National University”. And, if supported by a
scholarship, indicate: “Supported by an Australian Postgraduate
Award, Graduate School Scholarship [or other]”
3.
Policy on work presented for examination or assessment
Other than in exceptional circumstances, subject to Director’s approval
on the recommendation of Heads of Workshops/Supervisor, the majority of
work presented for examination should be presented in a form that has
not previously been exhibited or otherwise presented in a public context
outside the School of Art. This does not preclude the public exhibition
of earlier versions of a work, or work that has been performed or presented
as work-in-progress, or work that must necessarily be presented in a public
arena for supervisory feedback to take place, or where interactivity is
integral to the final form of the work. In such cases, approval must be
gained prior to any commitments being made by the student. Where a work
has previously been exhibited in a public context, the nature and outcomes
of the earlier forms of presentation must be described in an appropriate
context (such as in the Honours or Graduate Studio Report).
4. End
of Year Graduating Student exhibitions
4.1 This major exhibition is presented throughout the School of Art, incorporating
the School of Art Gallery, Foyer Gallery, Photospace and other areas within
workshops.
4.1.1 Students
completing their program(s) mid year prepare an assessment presentation
in the relevant workshop or School Gallery spaces if they are available
and are invited to participate in the end of year major exhibition as
described in 2.1.
4.2 To be
eligible to exhibit, students must have successfully completed all courses
within the relevant degree/diploma.
4.3 All
graduating students are expected to exhibit.
4.4 This
exhibition is a school-wide responsibility, coordinated by the Gallery,
working with a Student Committee. All Workshop Technical Officers are
expected to contribute towards the preparation of spaces and students
are responsible for the installation of works.
4.5 These
exhibitions take priority over any other exhibition which may be planned
under item 1.2.
4.6 The
sale of student work, not purchased under the EASS Scheme, is subject
to a commission collected by the School of Art Gallery.
4.7 Proceeds
from the commission will be used for student scholarships , exhibitions
and associated publications.
5. Postgraduate
exhibitions
5.1
In January/ February/March and June/July each year the School of Art gallery
is made available for a series of exhibitions of short duration –
the “Graduate Season”.
5.2 In this
context, postgraduate students are at liberty to approach other galleries
or venues to exhibit their assessment work. The approval of the Graduate
Convenor and Workshop Supervisor is required. All such exhibition proposals
and subsequent exhibition material must acknowledge the status of the
artist as a postgraduate student of the ANU School of Art.
5.3 Examination
exhibitions
Graduate Coursework students are assessed at the end of the relevant semester
– usually in the week following Honours assessments.
5.3.1 Research
students are required to submit their written material (Studio Report
plus Sub-thesis or Dissertation) at least two weeks prior to their individual
end date. Research students then present their research in the form of
a culminating exhibition to external examiners either to coincide with
a “Season” or within the Studio context or an alternative
exhibition venue approved by their Supervisors and the Convenor.
5.3.2 Both
Coursework students who conclude in the previous semester and Research
students who are due for examination will exhibit in small group exhibitions
during these Seasons. Graduate students who have concluded ‘out
of Season’ or in the mid-year mini-season (for reasons to do with
individual end dates) are included in the annual catalogue but not in
the January/ February/March Season. Coursework graduate students are required
to submit their draft Studio Report at least two weeks prior to their
assessment.
5.3.3 The
School makes no commitment to provide the School of Art Gallery as a venue
for individual students for their examination exhibitions. Final decisions
concerning the scheduling and curatorial arrangements rests with the Convenor.
6.
The sale of student work is subject to a commission, collected
by the School of Art Gallery, as outlined in the relevant Loan Agreement.
