Undergraduate
courses emphasise study through closely monitored projects.
These expand the student's creative and technical skills
while laying the foundations for the development of critical
judgement. As the course progresses more emphasis is placed
on private investigation and research. This makes it possible
for students to develop creative independence. Progress
is monitored through individual tutorials, group critiques
and reviews where work is presented to staff and fellow
students for critical appraisal. Regular field trips and
visits to galleries and museums are organised each year.
Drawing
is an important preparatory activity to painting and a basic
means to visualise and develop concepts. Weekly drawing
sessions led by visiting artists incorporate both life and
exploratory drawing throughout the undergraduate courses.
These sessions develop visual research skills and broaden
the range of materials that are normally used.
Graduates
of the Painting Workshop have developed successful careers
in the visual arts as artists, teachers and in other related
fields. Some have achieved acclaim nationally and internationally
through representation in exhibitions and collections and
by winning major awards, scholarships, grants and commissions.
