The Painting Workshop provides courses and facilities for students of the visual arts to explore all aspects of painting and related media. Courses aim to prepare students for careers as practising professional artists and are available at both graduate and undergraduate levels. With the expertise of its academic staff, a broad range of technical facilities, and its location close to Australia’s national collecting institutions, the ANU School of Art Painting Workshop provides an excellent environment for study and research.

Workshop staff are supported by a dynamic program of distinguished visitors and artists-in-residence from Australia and overseas. Visiting artists have direct contact with all students through leading the drawing program bringing methodological and philosophical diversity to the Workshop. The example they set in their own studio practice during their residency provides an invaluable extension of teaching resources. Some recent artists-in-residence include Aleks Danko, Jon Cattapan, Robin White, Dong Wang Fan, Kevin Malloy, Eugene Carchesio, Euan McLeod, Guan Wei, Tim Johnson, Wilma Tabacco, Hossein Valanamesh, Jude Rae, Celeste Chandler, Megan Walch, and Louise Paramour.

Art Forum, SofA Gallery, Foyer Gallery and Photospace provide additional stimulus from a wide range of visiting artists, crafts people and theorists.

by visiting artists to the Painting workshop

Applications are welcome from school leavers and mature age students Australia wide and internationally. All prospective students are strongly encouraged to visit or make contact with the Workshop to discuss the various courses with staff. Students are especially encouraged to visit the Workshop on ANU Open Day, held in September each year, to talk with staff and students, see the Workshop facilities as well as exhibitions of staff and student work.

Prospective students are interviewed and must present a folio of recent work. The folio can consist of paintings, drawings, sketchbooks and other media, reflecting the applicant's interests and abilities. In addition, all applicants are asked to draw from life or the object on interview day to support their application. Applicants from overseas who are unable to attend an interview will be asked to provide evidence of their folio in the form of slides, photographs or digital images.
