A special feature of the ANU School of Art is its International Exchange Program. Through this program, students have the opportunity to study at University Schools of Art and Design in Asia, Europe, Canada and North America.

Three Travelling Scholarships - the Westende, Nigel Thomson and Margaret and David Williams Scholarships - are awarded each year to assist selected School of Art students with their overseas travel.

The School of Art encourages student exchange in the belief that it provides special opportunities and experience for the individual. The presence of exchange students also enriches campus life and thus benefits the whole student population. At the School of Art, an exchange student is one who exchanges places at an institution recognised by the School, to work under supervision for a stated period of time without payment of fees. All exchanges require the agreement of both the home and receiving institutions. Fees continue to be paid to the home institution. Students are responsible for financing their accommodation, travel, living expenses and the cost of any necessary materials while on an exchange visit.

In most cases exchange is possible from the nine disciplines offered at the School of Art. Student exchanges may be undertaken by both undergraduate and postgraduate students.

The School of Art has established exchange and academic co-operation arrangements with institutions in countries such as China, Korea, Japan, Canada, America, Thailand, France, Germany, Czech Republic, Finland, United Kingdom, Spain and Sweden.

Although there is no formal deadline for applications, students are advised to apply at least one semester in advance of their proposed date of departure. The recommended length of the exchange is one semester, and undergraduate students generally take part in exchange visits during the second or third year of their degree. Please note that study exchanges are generally not possible in the second semester of thir year or during the Honours year of study.

Intending applicants should discuss their proposals with their Head of Workshop and also with the School Adminstrator. Applicants should prepare a portfolio to support their application, including digital images of their work on CD, documentation of their academic progress, a detailed proposal for their study including a clear statement of their reasons for wishing to undertake the exchange, and letters of support from Head of Workshop and other lecturers.

What some international exchange students had to say...

Dorothea Spiro
An exchange student in the Printmedia and Drawing Workshop, School of Art, Semester 1.

“I studied at the School of Art for four months. In that time I appreciated a lot—that it was possible to use the great workshop facilities, as there is a screen printing room, a relief printing room, an etching room, a lithography room and a book studio next to each other. Everything is accessible and you get encouraged to try many different ways of working. There are always several teachers to discuss your work with and also students give comments, suggestions and create an animated working atmosphere. There are computer labs with a big amount of the latest Macs and PCs and with the latest programs on them.

A result of having all workshops close together and being able to take part in any one of them creates the feeling that people take their own and each others work very seriously, want to learn from each other and are open minded.

I enjoyed a lot that the working conditions are so great and the people so friendly.”

Susanne Petzold
An exchange student in the Ceramics Workshop, School of Art

“Since a long time, I was seeking for a good place, where I could go for exchange. I didn't just like to to find an exciting city, I was more looking for an interesting department, a professor who does work I'm interested in and could open up my point of view.

During a project that my school had with the Ceramics workshop of the ANU School of Art, I met the work of Janet DeBoos, Head of Workshop there. Through her I found the school I was looking for—a range of different studios based on crafts, and as I realised when I came here, the best facilities. So you can find many different kilns, good workplaces and three teachers here in Ceramics.

The time here was really great, and I liked the environment of Canberra with its hills as well. Sydney is not too far away, so you have always the possibility to go there. The city itself is quiet and the people very friendly, so I enjoyed my time here very much.”
