The Gold and Silversmithing Workshop provides courses and facilities for students to continue and extend the traditions of this ancient craft. Courses aim to prepare students for careers as practising professional artists and are offered at both undergraduate and graduate levels. As part of the ANU, with active academic staff, advanced technical facilities and located close to Australia's national collecting institutions, the School of Art's Gold and Silversmithing Workshop is an excellent environment for study and research.

The Gold and Silversmithing Workshop is the first Australian art and design school studio to house a rapid prototyping facility. Based on the fused deposition process developed by Stratasys in the US, the School of Art facility allows the development of large prototypes, forming tools and master patterns.

In addition to this, the well-resourced Workshop has facilities for most metalworking techniques including hot and cold forming, the machining of metals and plastics as well as advanced welding facilities. Finishing techniques such as polishing, bead blasting, elextroplating and anodising are also provided for.

Each student is allocated an individual work space and is expected to be fully involved in Workshop activities such as equipment and tool maintenance. The small student numbers in Gold and Silversmithing ensures a highly effective and intense working environment.

In addition through the Complementary Studies Program, students can access the resources of other Workshops within the School and University, including the three dimensional modelling and design facilities offered by the School's Computer Art Studio and its Applied Design — Product Design course.

The diverse expertise of Workshop Staff is complemented by a dynamic program of visiting artists from Australia and overseas who interact with students through workshops, demonstrations and lectures. Previous visitors include Yuri Kawanabe, Dr. Ian Ferguson, Paul Leathers, Helge Larsen and Darani Lewers, Wally Gilbert and Junko Mori.

The Workshop maintains contact with its Alumni and receives feedback on teaching outcomes through the experiences and achievements of former students in pursuing their careers. Such Alumni include:

  • Robert Foster of Fink Design
  • Blanche Tilden
  • Szuszy Timar
  • Volker Beck

Art Forum, SOA Gallery, Foyer Gallery and Photospace provide additional stimulus to students as they draw on a wide range of visiting artists, crafts people and theorists.

Visiting artists to the Gold & Silversmithing workshop

Applications are welcome from school leavers and mature age students Australia wide and internationally. All prospective students are strongly encouraged to visit or make contact with the Workshop to discuss the various courses with staff. Students are especially encouraged to visit the Workshop on ANU Open Day, held in August each year, to talk with staff and students, see the Workshop facilities as well as exhibitions of staff and student work.

Prospective students are interviewed and must present a folio of recent work. Applicants who have not had previous experience with metalsmithing techniques should provide evidence of skills which are relevant to the media, possibly including sketch books and other object-based design work. Applicants from overseas who are unable to attend an interview will be asked to provide evidence of their creative ability in the form of slides, photographs or digital images.
