Selection for undergraduate courses at the ANU School of Art (SofA) is competitive and based on a day-long selection process. On the day, you will be expected to present a folio of your own work relevant to the workshop to which you are applying and participate in a drawing class. The work produced in this class and the folio work are assessed by an interview panel.

At the interview, the panel is considering:
  • the quality of work as shown in the folio
  • your technical proficiency
  • your motivation and commitment
  • your ability to articulate ideas in a visual form
  • potential and likely success in completing the course
  • suitability for a visual arts education at the SofA

All Workshops require evidence of drawings, sketchbooks, other 2D or 3D work where appropriate, as well as any other artwork which illustrates artistic potential. Where it is not practical to include actual work in the folio, photographs or slides of the work are acceptable. Please note the following individual workshop requirements.

The Folio Preparation courses allow students to compile a folio of work for presentation at an art school entrance interview. Over the semester, the course covers a range of media and subject matter to allow students to develop a cohesive portfolio and includes life drawing, general and observational drawing, painting and mixed media projects. For more information, please contact the Visual Arts Access Program at the ANU’s Centre for Continuing Education on +612 6125 2892, fax +612 6125 5938, by email enquiries.cce@anu.edu.au, or visit the centres’ web site at www.anu.edu.au/cce/VAA.

Prospective students are strongly encouraged to attend Open Day, which is usually held in late August each year. Open Day is an occasion when prospective students and interested members of the community can visit the ANU, obtain information on courses, meet faculty members and current students, and see first hand many of the facilities and activities that make up the University. As part of the ANU’s Open Day the School of Art runs a varied program of events of demonstrations, exhibitions, and ‘hands-on’ activities. Teaching staff from all Workshops and Studios are available to provide information on courses and discuss possible courses of study with prospective students.
