These images introduce the work of candidates for the Doctor of Philosophy, Master of Philosophy, Master of Arts (Visual Arts), Master of Visual Arts, and the Graduate Diploma of Art. All of these different courses of study involve a major concentration of studio practice, in combination with theory, field work and research elements. These vary from two semesters to four years of full-time study, following an approved research program in a particular visual arts Workshop discipline. Studio practice and theoretical study is supplemented by participation in the seminar program and the presentation of a written studio report.
The nature of the academic processes which have contributed to the production of the work which we see on display is not always reflected explicitly in the works of art which are the final outcome of this study. The work of art often masks the nature of its production, yet the necessary processes of experimentation, of trial and error, the editing and culling or results, and the critical process are common to many academic procedures. However, unlike orthodox academic production, the resultant work of art is transformed though its location in a museum-like context, in the public gaze, and subject to critical assessment by its wider audience. Not only is each work open to interpretation, but also the critical input which has contributed to its resolution is in the gallery context up for analysis by the public as well as the examiners.
The catalogue is the record of the work on display in the School of Art Gallery, and the Foyer Gallery. We are especially grateful for the generous support of Henry Ergas for the production of this catalogue, and the many other ways in which he continues to support School of Art programs. The School is pleased to recommend the exhibitions the outcome of the School of Art Graduate programs, and invites the viewer to assess for themselves the high standard of the candidates’ achievement. We congratulate the candidates on their achievements and wish them every success in the future.
