Classes take place in custom built, well lit studios. The studio environment allows students the benefits of a hands on approach that is supplemented with seminars, theory critiques and reviews. To broaden their understanding of issues in contemporary visual practice, students are encouraged to attend Art Forum lectures each week and also visit the SofA Gallery, Foyer Gallery and Photospace to view exhibitions.

As part of Core Studies all students are encouraged to take advantage of the Computer Art Studio and the Institute's various computer labs which provide facilities for digital image making, 3D design and computer-based research. In addition students can access the considerable resources of the ANU School of Art and the ANU, and make use of the collections of the National Gallery of Australia and Australian National Library.

Core Studies provides full instruction and introduces students to the dynamics of composition, pictorial space, two-dimensional design colour and colour theory, life drawing, observation, analysis of form, anatomical study, general drawing, contemporary and historical drawing and pictorial elements such as line, plane, mass, form, volume, perspective and composition. Through the use of media ranging from computers to charcoal, students investigate drawing materials and develop sound technical skills. Students are acquainted with the language, practice and analysis of three-dimensional form and design. The development of skills and safe work practices is an integral part of the program. In Semester one undergraduate students spend four days a week in Core Studies and work on projects designed to introduce them to a range of skills and conceptual issues. In Semester two students undertake an introductory workshop in computer studies. They spend three days a week in their major studies workshop and one day in Art Theory.

The Art Theory component is an integral part of Core Studies and enables visual arts students to develop necessary critical and analytical skills, as well as providing an introduction to the issues, key historical periods and the specialised vocabulary used in discussing art.
