Johannes is presently the Head of Workshop, Gold and Silversmithing, ANU School of Art.
The centrepiece and tray forms have been a reoccurring focus in my work over the last 20 years. These objects straddle a boundary, if it is possible to define a boundary between sculpture and utilitarian objects.
They are explorations of form and colour and share an underlying quest for the reduction of structural components. The process of making is enjoyable, technically challenging and at times physically painful.
Born in Germany, Johannes completed his apprenticeship as a goldsmith in 1973, he then went on to graduate in design at the Fachhochschule in Düsseldorf, in 1978. After arriving in Australia in 1981, in 1984 Johannes took the position of Lecturer at the ANU School of Art.
Since his graduation in 1978 he has participated continuously in exhibitions both nationally and internationally. He is represented in a number of public collections including, the National Gallery of Australia, National Gallery of Victoria in Melbourne, Kunstgewerbemuseum in Berlin, Victoria and Albert Museum in London and the National Museum of Scotland.
