“I have concern for the whole piece – designing, throwing, finishing, glazing, firing, decorating - are all important to me in the creation of the work. Images, illusions of surface and the form they are placed upon create individual works”.
Two meanings I came across for the word ‘Design’ were: “to work out or create the form or structure of something” & “ to plan and make something in a skilful or artistic way”. I stopped looking for other definitions as these two held words that appealed to my way of working and thinking.
Create, form something, plan, make, skilful, artistic. For me design isn’t a stand-alone word. Rolled up in design, is a process drawing on many skills relating to understand- ing the materials, skills in making, and the creative and artistic intuitive side forming ideas that are all drawn upon in the process of design leading to the making and forming of the work.
I prefer to sketch in the material itself (clay), responding to the material in the plastic form (throwing, pushing, cutting, beating), then the application of glaze. Here the interaction of one glaze with another thickness, temperature and atmosphere controlling the final colour and not a sketch in pencil or wash but with glaze.
Design for me is more like a holistic approach, involving all aspects of the material, making, skills, knowledge and experience to create the final work.
