TRANSMISSION ELECTRON MICROSCOPES

Hitachi H7100FA (125kV TEM, 1995) with digital camera

Used for general and cold stage work not requiring high tilt.
Side-entry (limited)tilt stage. Fine probe capability (20-100nm) 0.144 nm lattice resolution. Double diffusion pump vacuum system. Electronic image rotation. Standard single-tilt, double-tilt and high resolution diffraction/reflection specimen holders. W or LaB6 cathode. 22 plate large format camera. Specimen movement trace. Point-to-point measurement. PC Interface. LN2 Cold Stage (Oxford Instruments). Gatan 622SC CCD TV camera with image intensifier. VCR. SIS Megaview III Widefield CCD camera (1300 x 1024 pixel, 12 bit).

Philips EM430 with digital camera (300kV TEM/STEM, bought 1985, transferred to ANUEMU and upgraded 1998)

Used for materials science or biological work requiring higher resolution, high tilt/high kV or X-ray analysis
Side-entry high-tilt stage. Diffusion/ion pump system. LaB6 or tungsten. Wide range of specimen holders including double tilt, hot and cold stages. Low dose unit. Ultra-thin window Oxford ISIS EDXA with mapping. Direct and annular STEM, digitised through ISIS. TVIPS 1024 x 1024 24µm 12 bit CCD camera and image processing system.  36 plate large format sheet film camera.

Philips CM300 with digital camera (300kV TEM. 1999)

SCANNING ELECTRON MICROSCOPES

Cambridge S360 (SEM, 1987)

Used for general purpose SE and BSE imaging, cryoSEM and X-ray analysis.
LaB6, Tracor Northern EDXA detector (Be window, 147eV) with Moran EDXA processing system, 4-segment backscatter detector, Oxford CT1500B Cryotrans cold stage/coating unit , point-to point measurement intrinsic to microscope. Turbomolecular and sputter ion pumps,. 70mm ("220") roll film, videographic printer, ImageSlave 1024 x 768 slow-scan image acquisition.

JEOL JSM6400 (SEM, 1990)

Oxford ISIS EDXA with ATW window (sensitive down to boron), quantitative and qualitative elemental mapping, CAMEO " chemical imaging" system. Robinson backscatter detector, forescatter detector, transmitted electron detector, LaB6 or tungsten filament. Diffusion and sputter ion pumps, 70mm roll film, videographic printer, video output, ImageSlave 1024 x 768 slow-scan image acquisition to networked PC.

Hitachi S2250-N (Conventional and low-vacuum SEM, 1992)

Sited in RSES. Used mainly for cathodoluminescence imaging, May also be available for uncoated/unfixed specimens, tensile stages etc. (Contact access through ANUEMU).

Tungsten filament, diffusion pump. Gas pressure in VP mode up to 2 torr air, allows viewing uncoated specimens. Secondary (E-T) and Robinson backscatter/SE detectors.  Framestore, video output.   (Not currently in use- Fullam Peltier-cooled stage, manipulators, tensile/compression stages, absorbed electron detector, beam blanking unit). ImageSlave slow-scan image acquisition (1024 x 853) .  Cathodoluminescence -  panchromatic imaging (off-axis mirror and PMT) installed  and spectrographic (fibre optic and Ocean Optics CCD spectrometer) available.

Hitachi S4500 (Cold Field Emission SEM, 1996)

High resolution, low kV, "semi in-lens" design. 0.5 to 30kV. Diffusion/ion pump cascade system. "Upper and lower" secondary electron detectors, Robinson Mk 6 backscatter detector, Oxford high resolution cold stage with magnetron sputter coater, ImageSlave slow-scan image acquisition (1024 x 768). 70mm roll film camera, video output etc.

Hitachi 4300 SE/N (Schottky Field Emission SEM, 2006)

Analytical below-lens design VP to 1000Pa. SE, YAG BSE and gaseous SE detector (biassed absorbed current type). Fitted with Oxford Instruments cold stage and INCA Energy 450 EDXA system. HKL EBSP, Robinson CL, 2-axis motorised stage. IR Camera.

DUAL FOCUSSED ION BEAM /SEM

Orsay Physics Canion attached to a JEOL JSM-6460LV SEM  (2003)

Dual-beam FIB system consisting of a tungsten SEM and a liquid galliumFIB with motorised gas injectors. Three gasses are available to provide enhanced silicon etching or silica and tungsten deposition.


LIGHT MICROSCOPES

Leica laser scanning confocal microscope. inc. uv laser. Inverted and (2004) upright microscopes sharing scan head.

Zeiss Axioplan 2 (2003)  Fully motorised upright epifluorescence microscope with Apotome deconvolution system, digital deconvolution and 3D reconstruction software (Axiovision suite). Zeiss MRc  12 bit mono camera


Zeiss Axioskop with 35mm film, video, and SPOT CCD (1300 x 1240, 36 bit colour) cameras. Halogen trans and epi-illumination, DIC(polarising), Optovar, rotating stage.

Nikon Optiphot epi-fluoro,  (phase and epi-fluoro objective turrets) with SPOT Insight 1600 x 1200 mono 12 bit camera, Iatia QPm Quantitative Phase System. Sony 3-chip video camera


Wild M400 photomacroscope with SPOT FLEX CCD camera 14bit  50Mb colour CCD camera. Upgraded with LEICA illumination base.

2 Nikon Labophots, one with phase contrast, halogen trans and epi-illumination. 5 to 100x objectives

    EasyScan (2001).  Limited to 0.5 x 0.5 micron scan area

IMAGE PROCESSING

Image and data analysis, Digitising/measurement systems, 3-D reconstruction, Image Processing and Printing.

The"Fishbowl",  Rm 035, contains light microscopes and , PCs with image handling software and a variety of input and output devices including a high resoluton Epson flatbed scanner with transparency option,  and a large digitising tablet.  It is also used for processing digital images taken directly from the electron microscopes. Equipment in this area is continually being upgraded, so check to see what is available from time to time.

OUTPUT DEVICES

Network access to 1200 dpi. postscript laser printers. In general colour and photoquality printing is not supported by the EMU.   Most PCs are networked, and have CD-RW, and DVD drives.   BYO USB drives are recommended.

Leica EM-PACT. Pressure controllable to 2300 bar. Specimen holders currently 350 micron x 17mm tubes, or c. 2mm dia x 200 micron deep larger flat holders.

    Biological Specimen Processing  A number of fixatives, buffers, resins etc are available as stock. A dissecting microscope is available for use within the fumehood.  Before using this area, see staff for explanation of features and safety procedures.
