Analytical Methods for Population Genetics

A National Workshop for Graduate Students and Scientists to be held at the
Research School of Biology, Australian National University, Canberra, Tuesday October 6 to Friday October 9, 2009

We are pleased to announce a workshop on analytical methods relevant to the study of within species genetic variation, to be offered by David Gordon and Celeste Linde (Australian National University). The course will focus on methods relevant to the analysis of microbial populations, as well as to the study of eukaryote population genetics.

Topics to be covered will include:

  1. Molecular markers
  2. Population differentiation statistics
  3. Estimating gene flow and migration rates
  4. Detection and quantification of recombination
  5. Population assignment methods, and
  6. Determining genotype relatedness.

The course will be a combination of mini-lectures, tutorials, and computer based practical sessions and is designed to ensure that participants fully understand the procedures involved and the interpretation of analytical results.

The workshop will present the theoretical framework and concepts necessary to understand the processes shaping the genetic structure of populations. Participants will be introduced to the basic analytical principles underlying a range of public domain software that are available for the analysis of genetic data. The software to be covered includes STRUCTURE, BAPS, RDP, LDHAT. CLONAL FRAME, SPLITSTREE, eBURST, TCS1 and IM. The emphasis will be on the use of these analytical methods and on the interpretation of the results and examples will be drawn from a variety of species.

David Gordon studies the population biology of enteric bacteria and Celeste Linde's work concerns the population biology of pathogenic and non-pathogenic fungi.
